Birthstone questions

What is my birthstone?

Your birthstone is the gem linked to the month you were born. Use the finder at the top of this page or the chart to see yours.

Why do some months have more than one birthstone?

The modern list was first set by American jewelers in 1912 and has been updated since, for example tanzanite was added for December in 2002 and spinel for August in 2016. Extra stones give more choice of color and price.

Can I wear a birthstone that is not my month?

Yes. Many people choose a partner’s or child’s birthstone, or simply the color they love.

Are lab-grown birthstones real gemstones?

Lab-grown ruby, sapphire and emerald have the same chemical makeup and look as mined stones, grown in a lab instead of the earth. Each of our product pages says whether a stone is natural or lab-grown.

Which birthstones are best for everyday rings?

Harder stones last best: diamond (10), ruby and sapphire (9), and topaz, aquamarine and emerald (7.5 to 8). Softer gems such as pearl and opal suit pendants and earrings.
